Risks of laser eye surgery
Are there any risks with laser eye surgery?
Laser eye surgery is the number one most performed eye surgery in the World. Yet, it is not riskless and there are complications as with any other surgery.
Major risk for LASIK, Notouch, SMILE or any other laser eye surgery technique is the wrong patient selection. All of the laser refractive surgery procedures result in decreased thickness of the cornea. Prior to the surgery the thichness, topography and shape of the cornea should be regular and appropriate for laser surgery. Also with the biomicroscopic examination of your cornea we check the heatlth of corneal tissue and make sure it is suitable for laser treatment. Thin and diseased corneas (like keratoconus) may be deformed after laser vision correction.
All laser vision corresction surgeries cause dry eyes (even Notouch and LASIK). Depending on the amount of corneal tissue removed and your basic quality and the quantity of your own tear film you may get dry eyes after laser eye surgery. This usually lasts 6-9 months and you need to use artificial tear drops during this time period: It is very rare that laser induced dryness becomes persistant. However if you have any disease which may affect your tear production (such as rheumatoid arthritis) you may be at higher risk for developing dry eye syndrome.
Seeing halos, starbursts etc is common after laser eye surgery especially at dim light. This is usually temporary. To decrease the risk for these visual disturbances we usually select wavefront guided or optimized treatments with larger and degrading optical zones depending on you cornea and pupil Dynamics. Please discuss with your doctor before the surgery how to avoid these complications.
