Laser eye surgery (LASIK, iLasik, LASEK, PRK, NO TOUCH LASER, SMILE)
Different types of lasers are used to treat different eye conditions. The main laser used to treat the refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) is the excimer laser.
LASIK has been the most frequently used technique in excimer laser refractive surgery to eliminate the need for eye glasses and contact lenses. Being a painless, straightforward procedure where the patients gains the full visual performeance just in a few hours made LASIK surgery the most popular surgey all over the world for nearly 30 years.
Just a few numbing drops makes LASIK surgery painless. First a thin surface layer called “flap” is created at the cornea layer of the eye either with a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser (bladeless LASIK). Th refractive error is corrected with the excimer laser on the corneal tissue plane. The cornea is reshaped with the cold and painless laser light and the flap is repositioned. The corneal flap attaches and heals by itself without the need of any stitches. Mild stinging and burning sensation will accompany some tearing for a few hours after LASIK surgery. A short nap will expediate healing and the patients can see as if they have their glasses or contacts on 3-4 hours after the surgery. It is usually possible to work or do the daily routine the day after surgery.
Other alternative laser treatment techniques are “surface treatment” (PRK, LASEK, NO TOUCH LASER) and SMILE techniques. Compared to LASIK, no flaps are created in surface treatment and SMILE surgeries. The same excimer laser used for LASIK is used to perform PRK, LASEK and NO TOUCH LASER surgeries. This time no flap is created; the surface cells of the cornea are cleared mechanically, with the help of ethanol or the excimer laser itself. Then corneal tissue reshaping is performed just as in LASIK surgery. Since no corneal flaps are created, these laser surgery techniques are more suitable for thin corneas.
ReLex SMILE surgery is also a flepless laser procedure performed with a femtosecond laser. Myopia up to 10 diopters and astigmatism up to 5 diopetrs can be treated with SMILE technique.
